About Pyin Oo Lwin

Pyin Oo Lwin, the city of flowers is situated in Mandalay Division in central Myanmar. Pyin Oo Lwin (ျပင္ဦးလြင္) was once called "Maymyo" ေမျမိဳ႕ (May Myo, May's city), named after Colonel May of the Fifth Bengal Regiment. The city is 3538 ft above sea level with an area of 763.74 sq.m. Pyin Oyo Lwin is famous for its extraordinarily beautiful scene and its cool, pleasant climate. Therefore, it is not surprising that the city is a natural magnet for people from all places both local and foreign. It is also an escape place from the heat for people from tropical regions in the country, especially during summer time.

Pyin Oo Lwin is also known as " Pan Myo Daw" ပန္းျမိဳ႕ေတာ္, meaning "The City of Flowers", for its different species and colorful flowers grown intensively such as Chrysanthemum, Aster, Orchid, Roses, Gladiolus and plenty of other colorful flowers. Flower-cultivation, being one of the chief agricultural businesses of the city, flowers orchards can be seen along the road and around the city. Therefore, the whole city is like a masterpiece of colorful painted picture with the green Shan Plateau around it.

The population is the mixture of Burmese and Shan race and there are large groups of immigrants, Chinese and Indians. The majority of the people in Pyin Oo Lwin are Buddhists and there are other religions of Christians, Hindus and Muslims. The different religious festivals and ceremonies are held almost every month. The most famous one is the competition of fire balloons, held on 'Tazaung Ting, Full Moon Day Festival" and it is one of the greatest Buddhist religious ceremonies in Myanmar. As the students from all over the country are attracted by the cool climate and quiet surrounding, Pyin Oo Lwin is particularly noted as a City of Education with so many boarding schools and Military Institutes.

Pyin Oo Lwin, being a major summer hill resort of Myanmar, many places of recreation abound in town. National Landmarks Garden, Amusement Park, Peik Chin Myaung Waterfall and Cave, BE Waterfall and Dattaw Gyaing Waterfall are worth visiting places in Pyin Oo Lwin. The Pyin Oo Lwin Botanical Gardens, also known as National Kandawgyi Gardens is famous for its panoramic view, twelve storey Nan Myint Tower, natural forest, Orchid Garden, Butterfly Museum, Fossil Museum, Petrified Wood Museum and a beautiful lake along the garden. At the museum of Forestry Department, one can see rare animals and different kinds of wood and plants displayed in great varieties. Many natural lakes, beautiful dams and famous pagodas are well worth visiting places. Cyber City, also known as Yatanarpon New City, is situated about 16 miles out of Pyin Oo Lwin towards Mandalay and it is concentrated as a place of learning information technology with a number of software and hardware centers, institutes, a modern University of Technology, abounding with a good number of companies.

The main products, manufactured in Pyin Oo Lwin include colorful woolen wears, strawberry and pine apple jams, wine (regarded as the best wine in Myanmar), milk and milk products, damson, strawberry, sunflower seeds, refined coffee powder, different kinds of fresh vegetables. They all are available in shops at very reasonable prices and exported to every part of Myanmar throughout the year. Pyin Oo Lwin is also the centre of silkworm rearing and there are Research Centers for sericulture and indigenous medicinal plants for pharmaceutical production.

Pyin Oo Lwin can be reached either by land or by train from its nearest cities. Horse coaches, tricycle and motorbike taxi will take you around travelling within the city.
